An alternative to FlipShare TV, with file backup
Recently, I discovered a very interesting device that not only automatically backs up all the networked computers in your house, but also allows you to stream all your media from one location. It holds a terrabyte of data (1,000 gigabytes). The device is from Western Digital, and is called the My Book World Edition. Its price is currently $169.00 at Amazon.
Problem #1: As I have noted elsewhere, backup is of considerable concern to anyone who has a sizeable library of videos, photos, and music. I have been looking into this question for a couple of years, now, and I have yet to find a reasonable solution for consumers.
Problem #2: It's also apparent that not only is FlipShare TV hard to get in this country, FlipShare TV and FlipShare 5.0 are virtually impossible to get outside this country, and that may remain so for a considerable period of time.
This device potentially allows you to share all your media within the household, and even remotely, without a computer turned on in the whole house. Rather than attaching to one of your computers, it attaches directly to a network port on your router. It works with Macs, PCs, or a heterogeneous mixture of computers in your household.

From their literature:
Furthermore, "all you need is the My Book World Edition drive and a digital media adapter or a game console like X-Box 360 or Playstation 3, and your masterpiece is there on the big screen." |
I ordered one of these. I'll let you know how it works out.
