FlipShare 5.0, Flip Remote Control, FlipShare TV and Other Surprises
I just got my Flip MinoHD, 2nd generation, in overnight mail. It wants to install a new generation of FlipShare -- Version 5.0, and I'm having some problems with that. Meanwhile, while I was just beginning to digest the changes in FlipShare 4.5, FlipShare 5.0 adds another list of capabilities, and one that doesn't even seem to have been announced: FlipShare TV.
While poking around in the new FlipShare 5.0 help file, I found these new capabilities:
- Upload your content to Facebook
- Full Screen key controls and switching to Full Screen playback mode
without losing your play position - Allow your Flip Channel recipients to re-share and download
- Removing content you no longer want to share on your Flip Channels
- Import non-FlipShare content into FlipShare
- Copy content back to camcorder (For Mino HDs, Ultra IIs)
- Watching your content on FlipShare TV
- Optimized video quality when you share with Facebook, MySpace and YouTube using FlipShare
- "Oldest first" sort order in Workspace
- Easy movie creation with Magic Movie
I'm going to take these in the order that I find most interesting.
FlipShare TV
Quoting from the help file, FlipShare TV is an "integrated solution to watch your Flip Content on your TV. (FlipShare TV requires purchasing the FlipShare TV - TV Base.)" It appears that there is a USB transmitter key that you plug into your computer, and a base that you hook up to your TV. Then you can watch the content in FlipShare on your TV, using the remote control we noted in a previous article.
Now, I consider myself pretty good with Google, but I could find no mention of any "TV Base" associated with Flip. I found mention of a new Flip VideoTM Premium Service Plan that provides extended support that covers Flip Video camcorders and FlipShareTV. I also found that someone has registered the following domains:
- flipshare-tv.com
- flipshare-tv.net
Import non-FlipShare content into FlipShare
Again, quoting from the FlipShare help: "You can now import some types of non-FlipShare videos and image files into FlipShare. For example, you may want to import video footage and photos that you have taken with another digital camera into FlipShare, so you can mix them with video clips taken with your Flip Video to make a movie."
Optimized video quality when you share with Facebook, MySpace and YouTube using FlipShare
I have, in fact, already uploaded a video to Facebook, and it looks very nice. I got bogged down trying to make a movie -- this in the area where I'm experiencing software errors -- but it appears that as of this latest version of FlipShare, you'll get HD ratings everywhere they are available.
More later... I'm just getting started.
