Video on TV

New article, new tip... soon a new video

Something got me inspired to think about the way the role of video has changed in our lives, and in a very short time.  We've moved from using video to archive our lives to using it to share our lives, almost in real time.  Flip, in its short lifetime, has played a significant role in this revolution. So I wrote this article to get it off my chest and see what others think about it.

One of Flip's shortcomings is that if you want to film yourself -- as a vlogger wants to do -- you can't see the LCD viewscreen to properly frame the shot.  There are commercial devices to make this a little easier, but I like this low tech solution.

I'm working very hard to finish up the videos that will be incorporated into a DVD -- Secrets of the Flip HD Camcorders -- that we hope to get out very soon.  Stay tuned.

The most intriguing Flip news I've seen recently:

  • Flip/Cisco acquired Tandberg, which is company that used to make tape recorders, but most recently has focused on video conferencing technology.
  • Flip registered a remote control device with the FCC.  No one without a non-disclosure seems to know what it's about.  Gotta be for some kind of set-top box, right?  What does the box do?  For one thing, it screams for an on-screen menu.

I don't think the fact that a missing feature for shooting yourself is going to matter to the success of the Flip. The iPhone also doesn't have it... hasn't hurt iPhone sales.

It turns out, Dave, that vloggers (video bloggers) complain about this all the time. We have a teacher friend who made a video introduction to her class from her own home, and it's a wonderful, but she frequently cut off the top of her head when she was filming. This camcorder is the right price and quality for vloggers, so it otherwise fits the market segment.

That is one of my complaints as well.. I like the solution though! I'm hoping that one day the Flip will have a rotating lense or view (ie: Sony Webbie) to address this problem.

I'm very curious what the next generation Flips are going to be!!
