Success with moving Windows Movie Maker 6 from Windows Vista to Windows 7
Three days ago I migrated my laptop from Windows Vista to Windows 7. That was a lot more painful and time-consuming than I thought it would be -- I started at 6 or 7 pm at finished up at 3 am! However, I think I know why. Within the last month I set up a backup system based on the Western Digital MyBook World Edition. It's a real-time backup system: It's backing up files as you create and modify them. I neglected to turn that system off before I started the upgrade. Then I got some file corruption, and ultimately had to run chkdsk to clean things up. Finally, I had a relatively small amount of space on my laptop's hard disk when I started, which probably caused it to do a lot more swapping out than it otherwise might have.
At any rate, it's done, and everything seems to be running smoothly. Today, after getting out the Free Weekly Tip, I tested the very thing that prompted me to upgrade to Windows 7 at this particular point in time, when I'm trying to provide the full scoop on Windows Movie Maker: I successfully re-installed Windows Movie Maker 6 on Windows 7.
I'll be writing an article for members about how to do that this coming week. The first step is to gather up the pieces of Windows Movie Maker 6 from your Vista machine, and you won't be able to do that after you have upgraded. If you happen to want to upgrade to Windows 7 before the article is written, please send me a note before you start, and I'll give you the basics.
