As I mentioned in my blog, we have been thinking, along with the rest of you, about the tragedy in Haiti, and what we can do to help.  The first thing we thought about was what charity we might donate to.  The second thing was how we might raise money to contribute to that charity.

is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life for the Haitian people, particularly children, through education, nutrition, and healthcare. They have been concerned about the impoverished conditions in Haiti -- about clean water, health and nutrition, emergency relief, and education for Haiti's children -- for nearly 20 years prior to the recent earthquake. They have boots on the ground, and they are getting doctors, medical supplies, food, water, and construction materials to hospital sites in Port-au-Prince as I write this.

Here is our simple idea:

All new membership fees that we collect between now and Valentine's Day will be fully and directly contributed to . 

Our understanding of tax law is that you can't claim a charitable contribution on you taxes, because you will be receiving value for the money you receive -- as much as I can provide.  If you would like a tax deduction, or if you would like to donate directly, or if you would like to donate more than the cost of membership, make a direct contribution to between now and Valentine's day, then send us an offficial acknowledgment of your contribution, and we will give you a membership for that, as well.
